17 Annual Academic Sessions – 2018

17 Annual Academic Sessions was held on 9 September 2018 at Hotel Galadari, Colombo. The theme was “Adding Life to Menopause”. The chief guest was Dr Razia Pendse, WHO representative to Sri Lanka and Guest of honour was Prof Mary Ann Lumsden, vice president RCOG and past president of International Menopause Society (IMS).
The programme commenced with free paper presentations with 6 oral presentations and was followed by the inauguration ceremony. The chief guest was Dr Razia Pendse, WHO representative to Sri Lanka and the Guest of
Honour was Prof. Mary Ann Lumsden, vice president RCOG and former president International Menopause Society (IMS). Prof Mary Ann Lumsden was awarded with honorary membership of Menopause Society of Sri Lanka following which she delivered the MENOSOC oration titled “Why menopause: What is its significance”.
Several publications of the menopause society of Sri Lanka were launched at the inauguration. This included 5 educational videos for the public and a book titled “All about Menopause” for the public which is funded by WHO and a flip chart on menopause for the midwives funded by UNFPA and FHB.
The academic programme was started with Symposium 01 which was titled “Menopause and Organ Systems”. The resource persons were Dr. Chandrika Ponnamperuma, Consultant Cardiologist from Colombo South Teaching Hospital who spoke on “Heart and Menopause”, Prof Thashi Chang, Professor in Neurology
from Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Colombo who spoke on “Brain and menopause” and Dr. Marius De Almeida, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon form Colombo South Teaching Hospital, who enlightened the audience on “Bones and Menopause.”
The symposium 02 was titled “Menopause and Aging” and was conducted by Dr Sunethra J. Perera, senior lecturer and head of department of Demography, University of Colombo, who spoke on “Demography of Menopause and Aging in Sri Lanka: Socio-economic implication”, Dr M.D.P. Gooneratne, Consultant
Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, who spoke on “Menopause and Aging” and Prof. Hemantha Perera, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist form Sri Jayawardhanepura Teaching Hospital, who discussed on “Menopause and Fertility”.

 

 
 

Annual Academic Session 2016

The Annual Academic Sessions and Annual General Meeting for 2016 was successfully held at the Samson Rajapaksha Auditorium, Sri Lanka college of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists on 21st August 2016, graced by Dr.P.G. Mahipala, Director General, Health Services as the Cheif Guest and Prof. Atul Munshi as the Guest of Honour. The President of the society, Dr.Mrs. Marlene Abeywardena welcomed the guests and reviewed the activities conducted by the Menopause Society in the past year. Dr.Hemantha Perera, Past President SLCOG & Menopause Society of Sri Lanka delivered the MENOSOC oration for the year 2016.

The inauguration ceremony was highlighted by a special event, the launching of the first edition of the handbook for Healthcare Professionals on Menopause in Tamil by the Dr. P.G.Mahipala Director General, Health Services. The inauguration ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks by the Secretary Dr.Piyusha Atapattu, followed by a reception.

The Annual Academic Sessions of the Menopause Society of Sri Lanka followed, attended by local and overseas delegates. The scientific sessions was a success with many consultants and postgraduate trainees actively participating in the day’s activities.

The academic sessions was coloured by guest lectures, invited lectures, symposia and a free paper session. The award for the Best Oral Presentation was won by   P M Atapattu , H G H P Jayathunga for their paper on “Impact of workshops on post- reproductive health on menopause-related knowledge in nurses and miswives in Sri Lanka: Preliminary report”

The Annual General Meeting of the Menopause Society of Sri Lanka for the year 2016 was conducted following the Annual Scientific Sessions.A new committee was appointed for the year 2016-18, Presided by Dr.Mangala Dissanayake as the new president.

Annual Scientific Session 2015

  The Annual Scientific Sessions was conducted on the 21st of June 2015 at Sri Lanka Foundation.It was well-attended with over 70 participants.The MENOSOC oration was delivered by Dr.Sunila Khandelwel from India. Prof.K.Valsan and Dr.Aswath Kumar were the other 2 overseas speakers. There were 3 plenaries,3 Symposia, 7 free papers, an invited lecture, a SAFOMS Session and a quiz. The sessions were a resounding success. Mrs.Rosy Senanayake , the State Minister of Children’s Affairs was the Chief Guest and Prof. Mohan de Silva, The Chairman University Grants Commission was the Guest of Honour. The means of attracting more participants for future meetings was discussed. The Annual General meeting was conducted on the same day.The president, steering committee and the council members were acknoleged for their contribution. It was decided to formally acknowledge the assistance given by Gihan , Shaveen and pre-intern doctors.

The Annual Scientific Sessions and Annual General Meeting for 2014 was successfully held at the Hotel Taj  Samudra on 15 th June 2014, graced by Hon Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena as the Cheif Guest and Dr.Palitha Mahipala , Director General, Health Services as the Guest of Honour. The President of the society,Dr.Rohana Haththotuwa welcomed the guests and reviewed the activities conducted by the Menopause Society in the past year. Dr.M.D.P.Goonaratna,President SAFOMS delivered the MENOSOC oration for the year 2014.

The inauguration ceremony was highlighted by a special event, the launching of the second edition of the handbook for Healthcare Professionals on Menopause in Sinhala by the Honourable Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena.Dr.Maninder Ahuja, the president of Indian Menopause Society handed over a copy of a book on menopause authored by her, to the Honourable Minister.The inauguration ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks by the Secretary Dr.Harsha Atapattu, followed by a reception.

The Annual General Meeting of the Menopause Society of Sri Lanka for the year 2014 was conducted following the Annual Scientific Sessions.A new committee was appointed for the year 2014-16, Presided by Dr.Mrs.Marlene Abeywardena as the new president.

 

Annual Academic Session – 2013

 

The Annual Academic Sessions of the Menopause Society of Sri Lanka was held on 24th- 25th August 2013 at Waters Edge, Colombo.This was attended by local and overseas delegates.

The inauguration of the Academic Sessions was held at Taj Samudra Hotel on the evening of 24th August attended by distinguished guests and well wishers. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Dr.P.G.Maheepala, Director General of Health Services,Ministry of Health and the Guest of Honour was Dr.Pramila Senanayake, President FOGSI delivered the Menopause Society in the past year. Dr.Hema Divakar, President FOGSI delivered the MENOSOC oration titled ” Journey through the ages “. The ceremony concluded with the Vote of Thanks by the Secretary Dr.Harsha Atapattu, followed by a cultural show and a reception, Where the guests enjoyed an evening of camaraderie.

The scientific sessions was a success with many consultants and postgraduate trainees actively participating in the day’s activities.

Prof.Mary Ann Lumsden,Past President of the British Menopause Society, Dr.Prasad Pattnaik, President Elect, IMS- 2015, Dr.Hema Divakar and Dr.Vineet Mishra, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist from India were the overseas speakers who shared their knowledge on menopause related issues. The local faculty included Dr.Kanishka Karunarathna , Prof. Sarath Lekamwasam, Dr. Dhammika Dissanayake, Dr.Piyusha Atapattu, Dr.Hemantha Perera,Dr. M.D.P.Goonaratna, Prof.Dilani Lokuhetty, Dr.S.Rathnayake, Prof.Janaki Hewavisenthi, Dr.Shehan Williams, Prof. Srinath Chandrasekera and Dr.Rukshan Fernandopulle.

The academic sessions was coloured by guest lectures, invited lectures, symposia and a free paper session. The award for the Best Oral Presentation was won by Bandara LMH, Bandara HMST, Yapa MUD, Atapattu PM for their paper on ” Awareness of health issues related to menopause among patients attending Out-Patient Department of National Hospital of Sri Lanka”.

Dr.Pattanaik and Dr.Mishra conducted a pre-congree workshop on” Sutureless undescended vaginal hysterectomy and urogynaecological surgery”, at the Cancer Institute, Maharagama, Which was well-attended.

Annual Academic Sessions 2012

The Annual Scientific Conference of the Menopause Society of Sri Lanka was successfully held from 27th- 28th July 2012 at Galadari Hotel,Colombo. with many distinguished overseas and local speakers providing a wealth of new knowledge on menopause-related subjects.

The grand opening ceremony had Dr. Firdosi Rustom Mehta, Country Representative – WHOas the Chief Guest and Professor Mary Ann Lumden, the Past President of British Menopause Society as the Guest of Honour. Dr. Jaideep Malhotra delivered the oration “oestrogen from womb to tomb”. The guests were treated to a magnificent cultural show and reception at the conclusion of the ceremony.
